IMHA Announces 2026 Rulebook Update & Program Expansion

The International Mustang Horse Association (IMHA) is pleased to announce the release of the 2026 Rulebook Update.

In 2025, IMHA introduced its first official rulebook. That foundational document established the framework for how we evaluate mustangs, host competitions, and recognize excellence within our community. We also hosted our very first IMHA-produced show in Yamhill, Oregon—an important milestone that marked the beginning of IMHA as an organization offering opportunities to mustangs beyond adoption

Since then, we have carefully reviewed every section of the rulebook and fully revamped it to more clearly reflect our mission, values, and long-term vision. The 2026 edition is not simply a revision—it is a refinement. It more accurately states what we want it to say, clarifies expectations for exhibitors and show management, and introduces new policies alongside show rules. Our goal is consistency, transparency, and meaningful standards that support mustang owners across disciplines and offer mustangs and their exhibitors more opportunities to be recognized.

Expanding IMHA-Produced Shows

Building on the success of our inaugural 2025 event in Yamhill, IMHA will produce three official shows in 2026.

The first show is already scheduled for March 13–15 in Yamhill, Oregon. A second show is planned for mid-summer, and the final produced show will take place in the fall. Locations for the summer and fall events will be announced soon.

Our produced shows are designed to showcase mustangs in classed work designed by IMHA. We debued Rail & Trail at the inagural show and it was enjoyed by participants for it's unique and fun style. It was quite a work out for the mustangs but they took it in stride. At our next show, we intend to debut "Precision Pattern,"  which is a class designed to showcase Mustangs' trainability and their ability to execute precise maneuvers. It'll be both an in-hand and mounted class.”

Introducing IMHA Endorsed Shows

One of the most exciting developments for 2026 is the official launch of IMHA "Endorsed Shows."

This program allows exhibitors to earn IMHA points at shows that IMHA does not directly produce. In other words, almost any show can be sanctioned or "approved" by  IMHA even if it is primarily another type of competition—such as reining, ranch horse, English, or open shows—provided it meets IMHA’s endorsement criteria.

This creates a powerful opportunity for mustang owners. Instead of needing to attend only IMHA-produced events, exhibitors can earn points while competing in the disciplines they already participate in. Our aim is to integrate mustangs into the broader horse industry while maintaining IMHA’s distinct standards for recognition. This also allows our members beyond the PNW to host IMHA approved shows.

Additionally, exhibitors may earn smaller point values at nearly any show by submitting a show bill and proper documentation. This flexible pathway ensures that mustang competitors in remote regions or diverse circuits still have access to IMHA recognition.

Launching the IMHA Judges Program

In 2026, IMHA will also begin carding its first official IMHA Judges. This marks an important milestone in building professional standards within the organization.

IMHA will issue two types of credentials:

IMHA JudgeThese individuals are specifically trained and approved to judge IMHA-produced and IMHA-designated classes according to IMHA standards and specifications.

IMHA Endorsed JudgeThis credential is designed for judges who already hold cards with recognized organizations. The IMHA endorsement does not expand a judge’s authority beyond their existing credentials. Instead, it allows them to judge IMHA-recognized mustangs within the scope of the disciplines they are already licensed to officiate.

This structure protects exhibitors, judges, and IMHA alike by maintaining clear credential boundaries while expanding opportunities for mustang participation.

Recognizing Excellence in 2026 and Beyond

At the conclusion of the 2026 show season, IMHA will award the Top Five Point-Earning IMHA Registered Horses, as well as the Top Point-Earning IMHA Members.

In addition, beginning in 2026 and continuing annually, IMHA will formally recognize:

  • The All-Time High Point Mustang

  • The All-Time High Point Exhibitor

These awards reflect our commitment to honoring sustained excellence, consistency, and dedication within the mustang community. As our association grows, so will the prestige and meaning behind these recognitions. The all-time High Point mustang and High Point mustang exhibitor awards will be trophies kept by IMHA. Each year new names will be added to these awards celebrating the achievement.

In addition we plan to annually acknowledge the HMA with the most points earned per calendar year.

All of these awards and points are designed to elevate mustangs in general. It's time the world knows what we know! Mustangs are more than just the story of their adoption... That's simply the first step in a long life of excellence.

A Stronger, Clearer Future

The 2026 Rulebook Update represents growth. It reflects IMHA’s commitment to meaningful horsemanship, fair evaluation, and professional standards that elevate the mustang community.

With expanded produced shows, endorsed show pathways, the launch of our judges program, and year-end awards recognizing true achievement, IMHA is building a system that creates opportunity, structure, and long-term recognition for mustang competitors across the country.

We look forward to an outstanding 2026 season.
